Come to Carson Mell's reading/booklaunch/signing for his novel, The Blue Bourbon Orchestra on Thursday, 7:30pm

Spanning the late eighties to the present, The Blue Bourbon Orchestra is an epic novel narrated by an alcoholic guitarist named Charles Leslie deBeau. With great candor, humor and regret, he tells the story of the greatest force he ever encountered, so powerful that it completely changed the direction of his life and many others: the fading country band The Blue Bourbon Orchestra, and its silver-tongued lead singer, Guy Fisher. Guy Fisher appears in the trailer in the animated chef mask, playing his character 'The Warlock' in one of the many homemade music videos that he and Charles make out behind his house. The Blue Bourbon Orchestra was written by Carson Mell,. author of last year's indie hit,Saguaro, The Life and Adventures of Bobby Allen Bird.

Plus a performance by Alex Johnstone!

COLLAGE CULTURE
EXAMINING THE 21 CENTURY'S IDENTITY CRISIS
|
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28 - 7:30 Free
Book launch with readings by Aaron Rose and Mandy Kahn, and opening of installation by the book's designer, Brian Roettinger. Collage Culture points to the 21st century as an era of collage, in which creative works are made by combining elements from the former century. Why have musicians, writers and designers fallen in love with the past, busying themselves with the borrowed, instead of creating their art from scratch? In an essay called "The Death of Subculture," Aaron Rose urges a new generation of artists to end the collage era by adopting a philosophy of creative innovation. Mandy Kahn's essay "Living in the Mess," considers whether the collage of references that surrounds us might negatively affect the way we feel. The book's designer, Brian Roettinger transforms the text into word pictures, made in collaboration with artist/programmer Chandler McWilliams by translating 25 compositional rules into a computer application that generates collages. This application will be installed in the gallery and event-goers will be able to create and print collages using the same process developed to make the book's art. The book is also being released as a record that combines readings of its texts with an original score by No Age, released on PPM. |

Taking a camera with us everywhere we went, some might look at these pictures as just... pictures. But to us these mean something: great times we’ll never get back. Moments of history that made us. Awkward moments that might have fucked shit up. –Tyler The Creator
100 Seven Inch Records by John Wiese
Opening reception: Monday, October 17, 6-9pm
On the occasion of artist and composer John Wiese's 100th 7-inch record release, Family hosts a sound installation and retrospective exhibit. All 7-inches produced by Wiese over the last 13 years are presented, in addition to a sound piece featuring the 100th, entitled Exhausted Spectral Incantation - a one-sided record, featuring a single lock-groove. Many releases were published on Wiese's own label, Helicopter, as well as over 50 other independent labels from around the world, in editions from 6 to several thousand.
To coincide with the exhibition a hardcover monograph (b/w, 150 pages) will be published by Helicopter featuring essay's by Sam McKinlay and Brian Roettinger.
From the preface: "A 7-inch record is the best format. I spent the majority of my youth mail-ordering 7-inches and waiting, usually months, for them to arrive. 7-inches really are the best because, practically speaking, the only thing you can do while they play is listen to them." - John Wiese
John Wiese (b. 1977) is an artist and composer living in Los Angeles, California. He works primarily in recorded and performed sound with a focus on installation and multi-channel diffusions, as well as scoring for large ensembles. He has toured extensively throughout the world, covering the US, UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. He is also a founding member of the concrète grindcore band Sissy Spacek.
Open 1-9pm, Closed Mondays
