100 Seven Inch Records by John Wiese

Opening reception: Monday, October 17, 6-9pm

On the occasion of artist and composer John Wiese's 100th 7-inch record release, Family hosts a sound installation and retrospective exhibit. All 7-inches produced by Wiese over the last 13 years are presented, in addition to a sound piece featuring the 100th, entitled Exhausted Spectral Incantation - a one-sided record, featuring a single lock-groove. Many releases were published on Wiese's own label, Helicopter, as well as over 50 other independent labels from around the world, in editions from 6 to several thousand.

To coincide with the exhibition a hardcover monograph (b/w, 150 pages) will be published by Helicopter featuring essay's by Sam McKinlay and Brian Roettinger.

From the preface: "A 7-inch record is the best format. I spent the majority of my youth mail-ordering 7-inches and waiting, usually months, for them to arrive. 7-inches really are the best because, practically speaking, the only thing you can do while they play is listen to them." - John Wiese

Please join us for the book launch of Matthew Thurber's collection of 1-800-MICE. Thurber will be signing books and offering a special solo performance as Ambergris.

1-800-MICE is Matthew Thurber's comic book anthropological study of the imaginary city of Volcano Park: a cross between Thomas Pynchon, Robert Altman and J.R.R. Tolkien. Over the course of the story we meet Peace Punk, a punker on the verge of a bourgeois lifestyle; Tom Chief, a beat cop with an identity crisis; and Groomfiend, a daffy creature who leads the narrative.

"1-800-MICE reads like a mysterious oddball artifact from a much stranger and cooler parallel universe."-Matt Groening

“Matthew Thurber has singlehandedly revived the Surrealist program of revolutionary politics through dreamwork. What more can you ask for in a comic-book?” This edition collects five issues of 1-800-MICE, plus 48 pages of new material."
