Beginners: Drawings and Photographs
Mike Mills / Todd Cole / Sarah Soquel Morhaim
June 16 - July 10

Opening Reception and book launch/signing:

Thursday, June 16, 6 - 9pm

Family is proud to present an exhibition of new drawings by Mike Mills inspired by his film, Beginners. Also featured are photographs by Todd Cole and Sarah Soquel Morhaim, taken on set during the film's production.

Mills will be signing copies of Beginners, the new book collecting these drawings from 6 - 7:30pm.

This is the first show in our new, much expanded gallery!

Mills says the Beginners film's main character, Oliver, "shares some things with me: we both do graphic design, we both often figure out what we're thinking by drawing, we both have dogs and we both did record covers for a very real band named The Sads. The book contains all the drawings which I (Mike) drew, and that Oliver (played by Ewan McGregor) works with in the film. Oliver has the unfortunate idea of creating an illustrated 'History of Sadness' as a record cover for the The Sads, including such episodes as: Neanderthal man realizes he's outclassed by homo sapiens man, the pilgrims, industrialization, birth of the novel, and pets in general." Also included is a new series of drawings: an illustrated History of Love with such chapters as: the first butt to attract, great lovers in film, flappers, free love's not so easy, internal vs external problems and many more.

Photographers Todd Cole and Sarah Soquel Morhaim each took pictures during the Beginners' shoot, capturing atmospheres and tones congruent with the film. Cole and Morhaim's images extend beyond on set action, and into explorations of the many moods of Los Angeles.

Mike Mills' work includes many record covers and music videos for acts such as Ol' Dirty Bastard, Air, Cibo Matto, Blonde Redhead, Sonic Youth, and Blues Explosion; films such as Deformer, Paperboys, Thumbsucker, and Does Your Soul Have a Cold?; artists' books with Nieves and a retrospective book with Alleged Press called Graphics Films; as well as exhibitions at Alleged Gallery (New York) and V1 Gallery (Berlin).

Todd Cole has directed two award-winning films for Rodarte: Aanteni and The Curve of Forgotten Things, as well as the recent music video, Time of Assassins by Charlotte Gainsbourg. Cole's photography has been exhibited in solo shows at Colette (Paris), Monclova Gallery (Mexico City), and Brachfield Gallery (Paris), as well as featured in publications such as i-D, Purple, Self Service, 032C, New York Times, Vogue, The Fader, Art Review, The Journal, and Vogue Homme International.

Sarah Soquel Morhaim's short films have screened at the Sundance Film Festival, Palm Springs International, CineVegas, and AFI Fest, and her photography has appeared in Vice, Jalouse, Paper, and Bon. Her photo-book, King, was recently published by Kaugummi. Morhaim has an upcoming solo exhibition at Synchronicity Gallery (Los Angeles).
